Increase defence and defence industry annual contribution to our economy to $2.5 billion and employment to 37 000 people by 2020

Explanatory Comments

Employment

Total (direct and indirect) employment in the defence sector was 28,666 people in 2012 (latest available data).  This is an increase of 12,666 from the 16,000 people in the 2003 baseline year.  The 2012 result is above the 2012-13 milestone goal.

In 2012, 12,655 people were directly employed in the defence sector and 14,227 people were indirectly employed.

Direct employment numbers are sourced directly from specialist defence companies through a standardised Defence SA-managed survey. Indirect employment numbers are extrapolated from the direct employment numbers using industry multipliers. No data was collected in 2004 or 2005.

Contribution to economy

Since the publication of the 2012 Progress Report updated data for the economic contribution of the defence industry is not available as at 18 May 2015. Updated data will be published when it is available.
