Explanatory Comments

Commonwealth funding to South Australian Universities is the biggest source of research income, and had been increasing year on year until 2014. However in 2014 the total of national funding measured by HERDC was 5% greater than previous years, while funding to SA universities fell 1%. Hence South Australia's relative share of the national funding was disproportionately smaller.

In 2015 approximately $20m less was provided than in 2014. As the total of national funding measured by HERDC in 2015 decreased by only $20m across the board, the impact on South Australia's relative share of the national funding was disproportionately great.
