Target:99. Cultural engagement – institutions:
Increase the number of attendances at South Australia's cultural institutions by 20% by 2014 and maintain or improve thereafter
Attendances at South Australia’s cultural institutions include annual visitation at the Art Gallery of South Australia, the South Australian Museum, the State Library of South Australia and museums operated by History SA, including the Migration Museum, National Motor Museum and South Australian Maritime Museum.
In 2015–16, there were 2.442 million attendances at these cultural institutions. Due to major changes in visitation at the State Library due to the relocation of the Adelaide City Council Lending Library in 2013-14, this target is unlikely to be met.
The similar levels of programming in the cultural institutions due to static, or reduced funding has maintained the number of visitors at similar levels since 2013-14. This trend has continued in 2016-17 with only a 1.5% change in attendances in the past year. Attendances are affected by programming decisions and individual institutions vary significantly from year to year. In 2016-17, the Art Gallery had an 8% decrease in attendances due to no major shows compared to two (Fashion Icons and Tarnanthi) in the previous year and the SA Museum saw an 8% increase in attendances due to two major shows (Waterhouse and Curious Beast) being held in the financial year.
