Increase the number of attendances at South Australia's cultural institutions by 20% by 2014 and maintain or improve thereafter

Explanatory Comments

Attendances at South Australia’s cultural institutions include annual visitation at the Art Gallery of South Australia, the South Australian Museum, the State Library of South Australia and museums operated by History SA, including the Migration Museum, National Motor Museum and South Australian Maritime Museum.

In 2014–15, there were 2.503 million attendances at these cultural institutions. This is marginally above the baseline of 2.402 million set in 2003–04 and 379,000 attendances below the 2014 target of 2.882 million.

Attendances peaked in 2011-12 at 2.841 million, which was 41,000 below the 2.882 million target.  Attendances have since declined reflecting a reduction in public programming by many institutions primarily due to budget savings measures. Visitors to the State Library have also declined due to the relocation of the Adelaide City Council Library in early 2014.

Information technology has extended audience reach and enhanced service delivery in the cultural heritage sector.
