South Australia’s Strategic Plan is comprised of 100 targets. These targets are specific and measurable and enable us to measure our progress towards achieving the Plan’s visions and goals.
Each target is reported on through this section of the website. Data has been updated as at December 2017.
67. Zero waste:
Reduce waste to landfill by 35% by 2020
(Milestone of 25% by 2014)
In 2016-17, 872,582 tonnes of waste went to landfill in South Australia. This is a reduction of 379,378 tonnes, or 30.3%, compared to 2002-03 and achieves the milestone goal of a 25% reduction by 2013-14.
From 2004–05 to 2009–10, waste to landfill steadily declined. Waste going to landfill increased in 2010-11 and 2011-12 due to large volumes of contaminated soil from infrastructure projects. Since the peak in 2011-12, waste going to landfill has resumed the decline and is now at the lowest level since the target began and on track to achieve the 2020 target.
